We all are

Busy.

Isn't that what we all say.
I am so busy.....
We are so busy........
I've have to do this
and this
and go here
and make this call/email.....

When life feels busy and full, things that aren't urgent take a backseat.  And yes, that is what has happened to my little 'ol blog.  It has taken a backseat in my life as of late.

We've been running here and there and attempting to enjoy life and remembering to be thankful for all that we have at this moment.

Here's a little bit of what we've been up to (the camera has taken a backseat too ~ boo)

Sumo Wrestling

Basketball playing for Action and Coaching for Hubby

Waterpark playing
(pouting, playing, splashing, laughing, tubing running & balancing)

And more Basketball ~ this time for Sassy
(Breaking, Stealing, Winning by 2)

and celebrating a First Place end of the season League Tournament Victory.

It's been a fun whirlwind couple of weeks and I don't foresee things slowing down too much.   So life will continue to stay busy for us here ~ just like life is busy for you where you are.   We all are busy.  We just need to remember what is truly important and we need to remember to savor every second.

Good day.. Sunshine

How about a little Beatles tune to start your day off,

Good day sunshine,
Good day sunshine,
Good day sunshine.

I need to laugh, and when the sun is out
I've got something I can laugh about,
I feel good, in a special way.
I'm in love and it's a sunny day.

Anyway,
Yesterday, Smiley and I spent a good part of the morning at the park enjoying a beautiful sunny day!

and in case you didn't know, she's 3 :)

It was nice to get away from "the mess" and smile with her.

perfect in my own way

I am an imperfect Mother.

I make meals ~ breakfast, lunch and supper (not to mention the snacks in between).  Note, they are not gourmet meals.  And while they may not be everyone's favorite meals and the words, "ewwwww GROSS"  may be muttered on occasion (meaning at least once a week) they are nutritious, warm, and satisfying. But most importantly, no matter how busy our nights are, we eat them together, as a family.

Every night, I help our kids with their homework ~ math, spelling, reading, etc.  I've come to realize that perhaps I am not "smarter than a fifth grader (I'm doing pretty good with the 2nd grade stuff, so far ~ HA!)".  There have been times I have relied on my Mom, who is a Jr. high math teacher, as well as Google.  It isn't always easy, but we always figure it out together.  The way we come to the correct answers doesn't matter.  What matters is that we are working together.

Laundry.  I always have laundry to do, but most days :)  no one has to wear anything dirty..... or noticeably dirty.  And that is good enough for me.  After all, there is so much more to my day than laundry.

My home is not always spotless.  I promise on any given day, you will find dust, at least one unmade bed, toys strewn about and much to my dismay ~ at least one strand of dog hair somewhere on the floor.  As annoying as it is tripping over a truck, a doll, puzzle pieces or blocks, the fact that these things are on my floor in the first place, means I have children in my life.  Children who mean absolutely everything to me.  I can deal with a few toys scattered about when the exchange is laughter, giggles, creative thinking and time together.  Personally, I would much rather have a few toys on my floor, than miss out on those things.

I find myself fixing my children's hair daily.  Whether it be a few spikes or at times a small mohawk for my son, or one of the many hairstyles (pigtails, "minnie ears", ponytails, braids, curls, etc.) my girls prefer, I am there for them.  Even if my hair needs its own fixing and my eyebrows a good waxing.  As mothers, we tend to put our needs aside to take care of the ones we love.  Selfless love.  However, our needs are important.  When I don't take care of myself, whether it be a long overdo haircut or eyebrow wax, too many days off from exercise, or a much needed girls night out, I find myself losing my patience easier, frustrated and in a rut.  As hard as it is to get away, because we are so busy, or just plain tired, it is important to find my own time.
(One of Sassy's favorite hairstyles right now, is to have me braid her hair while damp at night,
then she takes it out in the morning and can enjoy her lovely wavy locks all day)

And bedtime.  This is not always the easiest task at my house.  You see, most nights of the week, we are running from here to there.  Currently, we only have two things going on.  Football and Church.  Those things together take up 4 nights a week.  Soon we will have basketball for both Sassy and Action, as well as church.  But here's the deal.  No matter how crazy our evenings can be or unfortunately, how much past bedtime it is (although we try REALLY hard to maintain this) we always sit as a family and say "bedtime prayers".  This is our time, as a family to pray together, thanking, praising and asking God for the important things and for guidance in our lives.  It is so important to us that we teach our children the power and love of God.

So you see, I am a mother.  Far from perfect, but trying hard and learning to accept that I am  "good enough".  My house doesn't need to be spotless, and the laundry not always finished.  The important things are taken care of, nutrition, school work and hair.  But what truly matters, is that I strive to love selflessly, teach my children faithfully, and pray regularly.

We are making memories, learning, laughing and praying together.  The fact that I am not perfect, makes it all the more worthwhile.

Yep, I won the cool mom award

I'm going to start off by admitting that this is NOT an original idea by me.  Actually I've seen it in a couple of places here and there in the last year.  The first time I saw it was actually HERE on the fabulous Hope Studio's blog.  You see, the reason I filed this project/activity into my brain was because of  four things:

1.  The smiles on the photographed kid's faces made ME smile.  I mean, if her kids were having that much fun, I'm positive mine would too.

2.  Last summer we trashed 3 or 4 actual slip-n-slides ~ come on people, what ever happened to quality?!!!

3.  It is STINKIN' HOT out!

4.  Jennifer promised I would be the "COOLEST mom on the block".  Nuff said!

Oh, you want to know what we made?

We made a:

Super, Spectacular, Stimulating, Simple, Slip-N-Slide

I made it very similarly to Jennifer's ~ with a few minor differences (such as fewer landscape stakes [I'll tell you why in a bit] and no baby soap (because I forgot about that part AND... they were going fast enough!)

Here's what you need:

Some plastic sheeting.  I purchased ours at Home Depot ~ it came in a roll 3'x50'
Landscape stakes (u-shaped fabric and garden staples actually) ~ We had a bunch on hand, I only ended up using 7
and
A lawn sprinkler

Roll out your sheeting  and cut to size. ~ I doubled over the sheeting at the top so we would be able to have a little extra reinforcement.

Stake your plastic down.  To start, I put about 5 stakes in the top (which was doubled over, remember).  Then I placed a stake about every 3 feet or so on the way down on both sides as well as two on the bottom corners.  HOWEVER, I ended up pulling out  all of the ones that ran down the sides once the kids started sliding down.  You see, once the kids started sliding down, the stakes started popping up.  I was concerned that someone would get poked ~ those babies are sharp!  I think they popped up because our soil is SUPER sandy.  No joke.  Actually when we dug holes to plant a couple of trees, my hubby used the "dirt" to fill up the kids sand box.  You'd never be able to tell it wasn't sand that was purchased from a store!

ANYWAY.....

Once the plastic is secure, set up the sprinkler and get that baby wet.

Once it's wet, send those kids running and sliding.

Then.....

Watch the tentative grins turn into huge smiles and
bouts of laughter!

Sit back and take it all in because today you ARE the "coolest mom on the block" and those smiles and all that laughter will go straight to your heart and create memories that will last forever!

Happiness

The other day, Sassy, her friend, and Action were outside playing.
I looked out the window and this is the sight I saw:

Dreaming, hoping, wishing they were in the neighbors pool splashing around.

It was a good time to remember sometimes you don't get everything you want.

I admit I am not perfect. I am guilty of desiring and craving the "things" other people have.

When this happens, you have to decide to make the best what you do have.  And when you can finally let go of your (unnecessary) wants and desires by finding a way to enjoy the gifts you have been given, jealousy subsides and happiness intrudes!

"Happiness doesn't come as a result
of getting something we don't have,
but rather of recognizing and
appreciating what we do have."
