Opinions. PLEASE!

I am tired.

Tired of this deep, dark, red.

Boston Brick to be exact.

I want something lighter.

Fresher.

Maybe a bit beachyer (what? It's not a word?).

But I need your help.

You see we have this:

and I'm afraid if I go lighter it will stand out even more.

The TV isn't going anywhere, but how can I make it go away?

Opinions?

Thoughts?

Ideas?

Please give a girl some guidance! ☺

i am obsessed with grey. so maybe a greayish blue for the paint and then, cover up the built in shelving above the tv with some old shutters(or if your husband can makes some rustic looking cabinets...like 4 pieces of vertical wood--with one piece going across it horizontal on the top and bottom...you know what i'm talking about? ha bad description)

I like the idea of grey- either a deep one, or you could give up on making the television blend and go lighter- it's versatile and can totally be "beachy". A jade green might work well, too. Those wall cutouts above the tv are tough- maybe some artwork or other decorative accent in that area would draw the eye away from it? Good luck!! (BTW, thanks for stopping by my blog!)

Wendy, thanks for stopping by my blog! Beachy, huh? I love your natural fireplace surround and mantle, maybe paint a soft blue (beachy or birds egg) and go with blues, sand colors and chocolate browns in your room. Hiding your TV is a little harder than hiding my desk wall outlet :)

girl, i so feel ya. when i moved in to my current house, our living room and dining room were ORANGE, ick.
i really like the idea of gray, it's a nice neutral. otherwise a neutral taupe, perhaps??

oh and a tip for you: if you do decide to cover the boston brick color, get a primer tinted with whatever color you WILL be painting the room. it'll cover the reddish color SO much more effectively, and will also eliminate further coats of the real paint color. :)

i would go for a green. but, that's probably because every room in my house is a different shade of green (not to mention the name' of my kids: hunter and sage! ha!).

I don't know if any color will make it blend exactly, so I don't think you can make a wrong choice. Maybe green would be a good color looking at the wood. I have a white mantle - with a green wall.

But have you ever thought about framing out the opening with trim? That might look cool and make it seem more like a built-in?

Hey Wendy! Gee, tricky dilemma. I just had an idea...okay, it's kinda out there - what about installing a picture rail (at a height just above your cut-out and mantel) and painting the top light and then the lower section dark, like charcoal, pewter or blue steel. It would need to be a shade or two darker than your mantel (which I love by the way) so it didn't look too 'bulky'. I think painting a light colour around the TV will be too much of a contrast. You should import your picture into a program like photoshop (if you don't have photoshop you can download Paint.Net for free) and have a play around with it.
Another idea would be to add some vertical or horizontal stripes. As your space is already broken it would help soften the edges.

I don't know if this is possible since the tv seems to stick out a bit, but could it be framed in and bifold shutters added? They could be opened up? Oh sheesh, I'm not good at this. I definitely agree with a lighter color though. Keep us posted.

How about that mustardy(?) yellow? Brighten things up a bit?

I typically choose paint colors by they way they make me feel - I like the living room to be relaxing and inviting, therefore I would go green. If not that a light blue would work nicely too. If you can get wood to look like the fireplace, maybe make a built in for all of the electronics? If that is too much wood, you could install a sliding smoke "window" door over the tv. Good luck, not that you need it, all your decorating is AmAZing!!

I HAVE NO IDEA...because I am so not gifted at stuff like this...I do like the old shutter idea! And as an FYI...I have a friend who is amazing at stuff like this on a consultant basis...She's amazing...You need to meet her...if you are interested let me know...she's the wife of the guy I suggested you to you for your basement! And I am sorry I am behind in commenting!
